THE CAREGIVING COUPLE

Toshiko (Toshi) and Hideo (Bill) Kajiwara

Family Caregivers, Western/Northern Region

Over many years, Toshi and Bill have cared for and provided shelter, food and clothing for many people. This includes Toshi’s mother and father for more than 17 years, Toshi’s sister for over 15 years and Toshi’s niece for more than 12 years. They have done this without additional support and on a single income.

With no opportunity for a vacation since their honeymoon, they’ve worked as a team using all their resources and countless hours in the constant day-to-day support and care of others. And, they still found time to be active members of Vancouver Church, helping with fundraising events and church repairs. In the words of their nominators they are “an incredible couple.”

THE ROLE MODEL

Mary Anna McKayTales2

Family Caregiver, Western/Northern Region

In November of 1997, at age 63, and seven months post retirement, Mary Anna’s husband, Gilbert, suffered a stroke while renovating their house.

As Gil struggled to regain some semblance of independence, Mary Anna became his tireless medical advocate, his dedicated supporter, his cheerful appointment and program organizer, his personal care manager, his renovation assistant and his chauffeur.

Despite their busy personal lives, Mary Anna and Gil have been active leaders in the Family Caregiver Network and she has served as president of the Stroke
Recovery Association of BC. She’s also been both a media spokesperson and a guest speaker for numerous support groups.

And, her message is always the same: There is life after stroke.

Anndhy has remained deeply devoted to caring for their father over the past five years as his care requirements have increased. His nominators are very grateful for the wonderful work that he has provided and continues to provide in the home.
