Overwhelmed mum
My daughter has recently been diagnosed with depression. She’s 17. I’m a single mom and a caregiver for my son with disabilities. Their dad has never been around. When I try to cheer her up or make her feel better, she lashes out and says mean things to me. I’m exhausted, crying frequently and can’t cope.

Editor’s note: Teens often have outbursts and anger along with depression (adults tend to show sadness). We suggest looking into help for you both. Ask your GP to recommend therapy and a support groups for both of you. Be patient, open and compassionate and do things to take care of yourself.
Is it their business?
I’m a 52 year old, single woman who works in the finance industry. I also provide part time care for my older sister who is retired and lives with a number of medical conditions. My co-workers have taken it upon themselves to help me meet a life partner. I like my life the way it is and I enjoy caring for my sister on my own. How do I ask them to back off without being rude?

Editor’s note: Wow! That doesn’t sound comfortable. Simply let them know you’re happy, as your sister’s caregiver and not ready for any changes. Turn the conversation back to work tasks. They’ll gradually get the message.
Can’t sleep at night
When I read your Summer 2024 issue, it brought back memories of my mother who passed in 2018. She lived on her own and about ten years prior to this, she occasionally thought her next door neighbours were trying to harm her. She seemed to get better then her hallucinations came back. She imagined ‘creepy crawlies’ and people entering from the balcony. We permanently closed that entrance as she threatened to jump. We learned that she had mixed dementia. As symptoms increased, long term care was our only solution. As our generation ages, our children need to be aware of these different mental and physical capabilities to balance out support.
