Hair salon copies
Q) I was recently getting my hair cut and discovered back copies of Caregiver Solutions. A great read and very helpful. I’ve subscribed and will pass on info to my sister who is helping me care for my mum and uncle.

Ready to travel
Q) It’s quite an ordeal to go on holidays with my mum but, bless her, she’s always up for an adventure. We’re all going on a cruise next month. I’m wondering what your recommendations are regarding vaccinations before we travel. The last thing we want is to come down with something while we’re away or when we get back.

Editor’s note: I travel a lot and I regularly visit my travel doctor before I go out of North America. Cruising can be tricky because you’re into and out of a number of ports and mingling with hundreds or even thousands of people depending on the ship you’re on. Better to be safe than sorry… get advice from your doctor or a specialist if you’re going further afield. You don’t mention disabilities or medications but its also wise to check accessibility and ask about other accommodations your mum might need ahead of time.
Epilepsy and aging
Q) My brother has a history of grand mal seizures. When his wife died he’s stopped taking his medication. I’m worried.

Editor’s note: This new behaviour may be a result of grief. Try to convince him to talk to his doctor to confirm a) ongoing need for medication b) mental health check. If he doesn’t you should. And, suggest a family neighbour keep a close watch as well.
