The power of routine for caregivers

Over time, having a routine has provided children stability, security, and predictability. A well-balanced schedule has been proven to help develop independence, self-regulation, and self-confidence. It not only creates clear expectations for daily activities, but it also supports the building of good habits.

These days, researchers are also talking about the beneficial foundation that having a routine has on an adult’s mental health and, by extension, I would suggest, for the well-being of family caregivers.

The predictable rhythms of a structured day can actually be comforting when coping with both the mental, physical and financial challenges of caregiving. While the inevitable chaos of managing daily life under challenging circumstances can’t always be avoided, knowing what to expect and plan for in some areas can reduce the potential for burnout, anxiety or depression. A plan can also offer up more easily actionable items, and lead forward momentum.

Said to be especially useful for those who feel that life is temporarily overwhelming, fostering a routine while caregiving helps to reduce risk, confusion and possible missed steps. It creates a foundation for tracking symptoms, measuring declines and improvements and managing changes in a loved one’s well-being.

For caregivers, scheduling also allows relief from decision fatigue, and planned time for realistic self-care activities such as exercise, mindfulness, personal care and errands as well as connecting with friends and family. A regular sleep schedule for recovery, planned meal time with nutritious food and the benefits of time for walking or outdoor activities can also re-build well-being.

Setting positive intentions for the day tends to provide structure, reassurance and a sense of purpose that simplifies. It frees us from the anxiety of moment-to-moment decision-making and represents a manageable path forward or a next step toward progress. And, perhaps even better, science suggests that the benefits of a more organized day include improved productivity, enhanced self-esteem, better focus and an overall healthier mindset.
