In a funk

When I retired last year, I lost both the interest and the motivation to accomplish tasks, and my lack of activity really worried my family. The book you recommended, The Retirement Maze: What You Should Know Before and After You Retire, made me realize that my life did not end just because I stopped working. I’m now planning trips and helping to renovate my sister’s house. I’m also part of a book club and I volunteer in my community whenever I can. I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

Ruth Simmons, Brandon, MB

Editor’s message: Fantastic. Changing routines and establishing new goals takes a bit of time, but you can definitely still enjoy yourself and stay active after you retire. We’re so glad that you found a way to get out of the doldrums. Please share the book with others, it will help them too.

Goodbye, worry!

After my dad’s terrible fall in his bathroom last spring, I’ve always been overly cautious about everything in his house. It was only after Caregiver Solutions provided tips for being safe at home that I discovered something could be done to increase his safety. We reviewed the tips and ideas and found them very easy and effective. Thank you.

Francine Humphrey, Thornhill, ON

Editor’s message: Most falls occur in bathrooms, but you’re wise to take precautions wherever you can. Ask a physiotherapist to check your dad’s balance as well; some strengthening exercises may be beneficial.

Love of reading

I’ve been following your Editor’s Choice and I must say, some of the books are very helpful! I love to read them in my free time. I especially enjoy the weight loss and nutrition books. What about printing some recipes on your website?

Tamara Lorringer, Thompson, MB

Editor’s message: Glad you’re enjoying our picks. And they don’t have to be expensive. You can e-read them (if the book is available electronically), buy a used book or pick them up from the library. You’ll learn
plenty. And yes—we will post more recipes on our blog. Thank you for the reminder!
