Burnout blues
I have recently left my job in health care to pursue my own business. Ever since leaving, I’ve been trying to overcome tiredness and lack of motivation. I’ve always been my family’s rock and person to lean on but I just can’t find the emotions and strength to be supportive.

Editor’s note: We understand how burnout can affect people in general and healthcare workers specifically. Our best suggestion would be to try to talk to a professional. Explain to your family that, after working in such a stress-filled industry, you need a bit of time and space to refill yourself. Above all, don’t feel guilty. You deserve some “me” time.
Cold turkey
Dad’s been taking anti-depressants for the last 5 years and I don’t think he needs them anymore. His doctor suggested he may no longer require them. I was thinking about just stopping his prescription refills on my own. Is that safe?

Gander, NFLD.
Editor’s note: You should never just stop taking medication unless there are clear adverse effects. Stopping may cause potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms. Please consult dad’s doctor and make sure you have a plan in place and that your dad agrees.
Sober Celebrations
I haven’t been back to see my family since my recovery because I was in rehab and then the pandemic made travelling impossible. My siblings aren’t easy so I’m scared they may ask triggering questions which could send me into a relapse. What should I do?

Editor’s note: Though the holidays are times for family celebrations, you are the one calling the shots. Holidays can be overwhelming and stress-filled. If staying with your support system is better for you, stay home. You can always plan a day to see your family members separately outside of the holidays. Put yourself first.
