A quick guide to bathroom safety

For caregivers, bathroom safety is always a cause for concern. Research shows that most older adults fall in the bathroom and many end up with hip fractures and time spent in the hospital. Here’s how to prevent painful accidents:

1) Grab bars. Install on side and back walls as well as next to the toilet.
2) Lever-type faucets use to make turning water on and off much easier.
3) Remove rugs. To avoid slips and falls and replace with non slip mats.
4) A shower seat/transfer bench. To make a world of difference for balance and personal care.
5) Hand-held shower. Attach to existing hardware will make hair and body washing easier.
6) Raised toilet seat. A few extra inches of height make sitting down safer.
7) Ensure the door opens out instead of in for faster access during an emergency.
8) Install soap and shampoo dispensers. This prevents dropping containers and slips and falls on hard surfaces.
