Live and learn

I’m thinking of taking a continuing education courses but I’m worried about handling the online portion. Any suggestions?
Boden Agillen,
Calgary, AB

Editor’s Note: Firstly… congratulations on your efforts and interest so far. Don’t give up. It’ll just take a little time to get familiar with this learning style which many people love. We’ve found a place where you can prep for on-line learning at university of ualberta.ca/current-students/academic-success-centre/resources/working-online.html.  In addition, if you can get help from a grandchild or a friend who is familiar with the technology you could ask for a few practice sessions.

Bothered by scents

Our homecare nurse wears perfume which makes mum sneeze and wheeze. Is it appropriate for me to ask her to refrain from using anything scented while she’s working.
Ezra Donaldo,
Toronto, ON

Editor’s Note: Yes, it is. Millions of people are affected by fragrances and suffer breathing problems, allergic reactions and skin rashes. I suggest you or you mum say, “I’m sorry to ask you this, but I’m really sensitive to scents, and I think I’m reacting to something you’re wearing. I’d really appreciate it if you could avoid using any perfumes or scents while you are in our home.”

Time changes

Dad and Mom really struggle with the time changes. Medication mix ups are the latest. Any suggestions as to how I can help them?
Bix Donaldson,
Medicine Hat, AB

Editor’s Note: Time change is different for everyone. Some adjust in a few days, others a little longer. Experts suggest start preparing a few days early by going to bed 15, then 30 minutes earlier. Avoiding coffee and alcohol also helps. Try to get bright light in the morning to rid them of grogginess. Sounds like they might need additional support at home.
